Thresher and sister-ship USS Tautog (SS-198) departed the submarine base at Pearl Harbor on 31 May. She operated along the East Coast through the end of 1940 and into 1941. Thresher immediately went deep to avoid. On her way to Pearl Harbor she set sail on 1 May for the Marshall Islands and Mariana Islands. Following training and sea trials, Thresher got underway from New London, Connecticut on 25 October for engineering trials in Gravesend Bay, New York, and shakedown off the Dry Tortugas.
